A dermatoscope is an instrument that is absolutely indispensable in skin examinations. Here, we give tips on how to use the instrument in the best way possible and what features make examinations easier. 
Modern dermatoscopes allow switching between polarised and non-polarised illumination when examining pigmented and non-pigmented lesions. The visibility of different skin structures can be improved depending on the mode. The following principle applies: Contact liquid is required for non-polarised contact dermatoscopy, but not in polarised mode. 
Some parts of the body are difficult to reach with a dermatoscope. This is why it is advisable to use a small contact plate for examining areas of the skin like the spaces between the fingers and toes, the ears, the corners of the eyes and the nostrils.
